The American College of Veterinary Surgeons is the agency by which veterinarians are certified as specialists in surgery. The mission of ACVS is to advance the art and science of surgery and promote excellence in animal health care through research, education and service to the public.
To achieve ACVS Board Certification, all veterinary students must first successfully graduate from veterinary school. Once that is achieved, they must complete a one-year internship prior to being accepted to a three year residency program.
It is possible that they are board-certified but in a specialty other than veterinary surgery. View a list of veterinary specialty organizations that are recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Surgery residents must complete the requirements as outlined in the ACVS Residency Training Standards and Requirements in effect at the start of their residency.
Now, this does not mean that every surgery that your dog may need requires the skills of a board-certified surgeon. In many cases, there are several more “routine” soft tissue or orthopedics surgeries that can adequately be performed by a general practice veterinarian.
