The Wernher Collection is now with English Heritage and displayed at Rangers House in Greenwich. The Faberge Collection returned to the family after the closure of the Mansion House in 1997. 34 years later I still work at Luton Hoo – now working as Historian for the Hotel – and still enjoy keeping the history of Luton Hoo alive.
The airport was still recognised as an integral part of the London airports system though, and in 1978 the committee began preparations to take Luton into the future and raise passenger levels to 5 million a year.
When he left school he studied Engineering at Luton Technical College and, like many Lutonians, started his working life as an apprentice at Vauxhall Motors, working primarily on military vehicles due to the war. He went on to join English Electric and then enjoyed a long career with British Aerospace.
The Red Cow stile stood at the entrance to Lancrets Lane, which still exists today as Lancrets Path. Tower Hill was the sloping land rising to the west of Manchester Street as it is known today and as late as 1842 Manchester Street was still known as Tower Hill.

It shows Mirza Khan and Zafar Qureshi at a shop in Bury Park Road that sold Pakistani, Indian and English food. The paper reported: “In it, one can buy chapattis, lime pickle or Heinz baked beans. It is the only shop in Luton of its kind and business is brisk.”
The English and Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Societies, Cocoa and Chocolate Factory was opened in Dallow road. The Co-operative Wholesale Societies Cocoa and Chocolate Factory was built in 1902 as part of the “New Industries Initiative”.
Yet, the town has a rich heritage as a thriving international hat making centre going back over 150 years.
