Hearing and saying the difference between ه,ح, and خ Hello. I recently started trying to learn Arabic with a friend. My friend speaks English, and I speak English, Spanish, and French. We're having a bit of a hard time with the three letters that have the closest approximation of the English "h".

Could anyone help me understand the difference between خ and غ? Sometimes I can see the difference, but most of the time they look like the same thing to me. Does anyone have any tips on how to pronounce them?
Add: Notice that there are many variations. Some of these are derived from dialectal differences (e.g. transcription of the letter ق, whose articulation varies widely across dialects). Others are merely stylistic choices (e.g. the letter خ, which is usually transliterated 5 in the Levant but 7' in Egypt).

I’ve always felt that Arabic transliteration could do without these numbers. Replace it with: H for ح q for ق ` for ع kh for خ And so on. This works in conjunction with eg ArabTeX which is an Arabic typesetting program used for publishing.
