The bonus tiles relate to the winds, as each season is associated with a direction and a flower with a season. Some tile sets will have the seasons and flowers numbered 1-4; these numbers correspond to the wind direction it is associated with: 1=East, 2=South, 3=West, 4=North.
What Are Mahjong Flower Tiles? Flowers and season tiles are different in nature from the suit and honor tiles. There are only 4 flowers (1, 2, 3, and 4) and only 4 season tiles (1, 2, 3, and 4). When drawn, they are declared and a substitute tile is drawn.

Flower and season tiles are bonus tiles that are not used in every game of mahjong. These tiles represent various flowers and seasons, such as chrysanthemum and autumn. Flower and season tiles are used to add bonus points to a player’s score.
When you draw a flower or a season, you have the choice: declare and replace the flower/season, discard (safest tile, nobody can win on it) or keep it a while in you hand (but the tile is useless because you can't make anything with it).
There is one each bonus tile, representing: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. It is commonly depicted with red characters (or numbers). There are eight tiles total when playing with both sets (four flowers and four season tiles).
All mahjong sets come with Flower tiles. There are two sets of Flowers, Seasons (1 SUM, 2 SPR, 3 AUT, 4 WIN) and Flowers (1 PLUMB, 2 ORCHID, 3 CHRYS, 4 BAMBOO). For Asian styles, the Flowers are bonus tiles and are not part of the 14-tile hand.
The game utilizes 152 tiles, comprising 108 suit tiles, 28 honor tiles, and 16 joker tiles, along with flower symbols. While the classic structure remains, players may adapt flower tiles to represent seasons during games.
The flower(s) or season(s) corresponding with the winning player's wind may increase the score. The Flowers are represented by a plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo. Whereas the Seasons are depicted by a fisher, woodcutter, farmer and scholar.
Special tiles – Flowers and Seasons In the popular (and earliest classical) versions of Mah Jong the standard set of 136 tiles is often extended by 8 extra tiles – 4 Flowers and 4 Seasons (sometimes only the flower tiles are used) – which make the element of luck more prominent in the game.
