So, I'm looking for a fun, OP build to dive in with For which difficulty level? Most of the easier modes don't need OP builds at all. Note that you could fill the entire party with your self-created companions without picking up any NPC. Also note that you could rush through the game on story mode, and then fighting power would not matter at all.
The Cipher is basically Pillars of Eternity's version of a classic D&D Fighter/Mage. You are going to wear light armor, weild a big huge 2-handed weapon for solid melee damage and cast spells to make yourself stronger while also making your enemies cower and die.
Some aspects of character creation/building appear to be somewhat different to D&D, and so there are some things I'm unsure about and would like some advice on: 1) If I can, I want to go for a sort of swashbuckling spellsword type build for my main character similar to D&D bards (particularly College of Swords).

Build a party that works well as a team, and you're fine. This game gets much better at higher difficulty modes when battles get much longer and a lot more interesting. I might start off on normal then actually, and drop to easy if it's too hard.
