As the title ask I was just wondering if the gtx 1080 is still a good gaming gpu and how people who have used it/are currently using it feel about it.
The OG GTX 1080 performs about on par with the original RTX 2060. Faster than the 3050, and certainly under the 2060 Super and 2070. It's certainly a more than competent 1080p card if you're happy with 40-60FPS and some blend of medium to high settings. Hell, at 1080p even high/ultra is an option in some of the less bleeding edge games. Reply reply
RTX was basically unusable as it would produce so little FPS in games like Control and Dying Light 2 with it enabled that I was left wondering why they even made these cards to support RTX. 30 FPS is unplayable to me, no matter how nice it looks. Now if I had a PoS GTX 1080. A PNY, a low end Gigabyte, a Windforce...
A water-cooled GTX 1080Ti can surely beat an RTX 3060. In terms of memory bandwidth: While the RTX 3070Ti and 3080Ti are beasts, the 4070Ti is a bit disappointing. Our favourite water-cooled editions: We loved the GTX 1080Ti EVGA Hybrid edition, (which is water-cooled), we still have them up and running after all those years.
Techpowerup has a useful relative performance chart, and the Gamers Nexus review of the RTX 4070 had a comparison with a 2070 (5-10% better than a 1080) and a GTX 1070 you can use to extrapolate the relative performance.
I can get a used gtx 1080 for 300$ and a new rtx 3050 for 380$ (i live in europe but i mean usd). The gtx 1080 is cheaper and more powerful in raw performance, but rtx 3050 is new, has warranty, better efficiency (not a big deal tho) and most importantly has DLSS. My goal would be 1080p 60+fps with ultra/or high-ish settings in most aaa titles.
1080 TI may be faster but it's old, id skip it. 3+ years of use maybe will shorten it's life & no warranty. RTX is nice but not used much and kills FPS. DLSS when it's an option is amazing.
Ideally, you should combine the best of both worlds and go for a 2060 Super or 2070 Super. 2060 will eventually run into VRAM limitations, whereas the 1080 won't be able to support any new features. 3060 12GB is also a pretty decent card if you want Nvidia and they can be found in relatively reasonable prices nowadays.
A new 1080 should have a comparable price to a higher grade card like the 2070. So in the case of 1080 vs 2060, well take the better and more expensive and better performing one, so the 1080.
Got the rtx 2080 in a sale for 650 €. The 1080 ti, which I originally wanted to buy, costs 750€+ (now 800). There are also some benchmark showing that the rtx 2080 is outperforming the gtx 1080 ti in some cases mostly its a tie though. The drivers for pascal have reached their limit though and for the new rtx is more room for optimization.
