If the branch contains code you never plan on merging, use -D instead. If the branch is in the upstream repo (on Bitbucket) you can remove the remote reference by . git push origin :branch-name Also, if you're on the Bitbucket website, you can remove branches you've pushed by going to the Feature branches tab under Commits on the site.
To delete a branch name in your own Git, use git branch -d or git branch -D. The difference between these is that -D is a forceful delete: delete even if your Git says "that would make commits unreachable". (In both cases, you must not have that particular branch checked out. Git won't let you saw off the branch you're perched on.)
I've created a merge (into the 'master' branch) that's now on a Bitbucket repo. Long story short: I need to undo that merge. I know that you can do this at the Github site itself, but Bitbucket doesn't have that feature. I'm not clear on how to do this with Git without causing a mess.
I didn't know you had a 1) local branch, 2) locally-stored remote-tracking branch, and 3) remote branch until I read that answer. Prior to that I thought there was only a local branch and remote branch. The locally-stored remote-tracking branch was an unknown unknown. Making it go from that to a known known is what makes that answer the best.
In git generally, the master branch is not special - it's just a convention. However, bitbucket and github and similar sites usually require there to be a main branch (presumably because it's easier than writing more code to handle the event that a repository has no branches - not sure).
When you are pushing a deletion, you must first change the default branch (on GitHub) to your new branch. That means you must have first push your new branch on GitHub in order to select it as default branch. Then you can delete master on GitHub. The same idea applies on BitBucket: Select the repository; Select Administration
I want to delete a branch from Atlassian Stash (a sort of github clone) in order to revert my changes. Please let me know what command will do this? What I know is git branch –D prod-652 deletes the branch from local.
My branch was gone (git branch --remote mentioned in other posts did not work for me) but I was trying to restore from my last pull request. I did the following which worked for me, recreating the branch with the same name from the point of the last commit. Within BitBucket, get the branch name and the hash for the last commit in the pull request
You can't delete a branch from Bitbucket if that branch is set as the Main Branch. You need to go into the Admin section of your Bitbucket repository and select a different branch for the Main Branch. You should then be able to remote the branch using. git push :
I tried merging the admin_assessment branch into the main development branch in Bitbucket. Before merging, I ensured that the "Close source branch" option was not selected, as I wanted the source branch to remain after the merge.
