With around 23.9 million inhabitants, Taiwan is among the most densely populated countries. Taiwan has been settled for at least 25,000 years. Ancestors of Taiwanese indigenous peoples settled the island around 6,000 years ago.
Taiwan is an island in the western Pacific Ocean that lies roughly 100 miles (160 km) off the coast of southeastern China. Taipei, in the north, is the seat of government of the Republic of China (ROC; Nationalist China).
But Taiwan sees itself as distinct from the Chinese mainland, with its own constitution and democratically-elected leaders. Taiwan has strong links to China, its biggest trading partner.

Taiwan is an island country located at the western edge of the Pacific Ocean. The main island of the country covers an area of 35,808 sq. km. About two-thirds of Taiwan is a rugged mountain landscape. As observed on the physical map of Taiwan, the Chung-yang Shan range (central) dominates the island.
Taiwan definitely has a defined area, large enough for being a country. It also has a considerable permanent population and, the island has a functioning government, even a democratic one. Taiwan's problem is the fourth requirement for statehood - the capacity to conduct international relations.
Taiwan has a well-developed education system, with high literacy rates and a strong emphasis on academic achievement. Primary and secondary education is compulsory, and the country boasts some of the best universities in the world, such as National Taiwan University.
