The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit library founded to gather knowledge in digital formats and make it available to everyone in the world for free. But 80+ million objects (books, web pages, TV, movies, radio, concerts, etc.) can be a daunting library to navigate.
The Internet Archive Wayback Machine is a service that allows people to visit archived versions of Web sites. Visitors to the Wayback Machine can type in a URL, select a date range, and then begin surfing on an archived version of the Web.
This returns a specific document whose URL matches the target URL and whose archive date most closely matches the date specified in the format YYYYMMDDhhmmss. In the example above, this returns www.cnet.com archived on October 7, 2001 at 8:39pm and 17 seconds.
The Internet Archive is over 116 million items and growing by thousands every day. It is trying to be everything to everyone: A music player, a movie view, a game emulator, a book reader, and so on.
The Internet Archive focuses on preservation and providing access to digital cultural artifacts. For assistance with research or appraisal, you are bound to find the information you seek elsewhere on the internet.
