Later proposals to include the Korean and Japanese languages into a "Macro-Altaic" family have always been controversial. The original proposal was sometimes called "Micro-Altaic" by retronymy. Most proponents of Altaic continue to support the inclusion of Korean, but fewer do for Japanese. [21]
Korean and Japanese have very different native scripts (Hangul and kana, respectively), although they both make use of Chinese characters to some extent; Kanji still are a core part of modern Japanese orthography, while Hanja were historically used to write Korean.

As another user pointed out, Korean and Japanese form their own sprachbund with each other, and they have notable similarities with North Asian groups like Turkic and Mongolic. It wasn't completely crazy that some 20th Century scholars included them in the "Altaic" family when that was a thing.
Tungusic, Korean and, in most recent versions, Japanese languages continues to be a viable linguistic proposal, despite various published claims that it is no longer accepted.
Nonetheless, not every business is prepared to enter the Japanese market. Linguistic and cultural barriers are major obstacles. The Japanese market is well-known for its high standards and maturity, and the country's 120 million native speakers are a testament to this.
The Japonic language group is usually related to Korean (eg Samuel Martin 1966) and in 1971 Roy Miller proposed to relate Japanese to Korean and the Altaic languages. The proposal has been taken up and developed by various other linguists such as Sergei Starostin.
The core version of Altaic, consisting of Turkic, Mongolic, and Tungusic, is sometimes referred to as "Micro-Altaic," and the expanded version, including Korean and sometimes Japanese, is referred to as "Macro-Altaic," but even the core version is very controversial.
