Sertraline is thought to work by balancing serotonin, a naturally occurring chemical messenger that affects mood and emotions. Sertraline is an SSRI (serotonin reuptake inhibitor) that increases serotonin levels between neurons (nerves) by blocking serotonin from being absorbed. Serotonin is sometimes called 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT).
Sertraline, found in Lustral tablets, is a type of antidepressant that is used for mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, and OCD.
Sertraline may be used to treat depression and other mood disorders. Experts are unsure exactly how sertraline works, although historically it was believed that sertraline's effects were due to its ability to rebalance chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin, that were thought to be imbalanced in people with anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders.
Zoloft (sertraline), a common SSRI antidepressant, can take about 4 to 6 weeks of regular dosing to reach its full therapeutic effect for depression. For other uses, such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a full effect may take up to 12 weeks of treatment.

Once sertraline is discontinued, at least 14 days must elapse before initiating a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Sertraline concentrate for oral solution contains alcohol; avoid this formulation in patients taking disulfiram and pregnant patients. Sertraline capsules contain FD&C Yellow No. 5 (tartrazine), which may cause allergic reactions.
Anyone considering the use of sertraline or any other antidepressant in a child, adolescent, or young adult must balance this risk with the clinical need. Short-term studies did not show an increase in the risk of suicidality with antidepressants compared to placebo in adults beyond age 24; there was a reduction in risk with antidepressants compared to placebo in adults aged 65 years and older.
