Welcome to Fort Bliss! The Garrison Command team welcomes you to Southwest Texas and Fort Bliss. Located on the largest international border in the United States you will arrive at the corner of Texas, New Mexico and Old Mexico.
The division officially uncased its colors at Fort Bliss, May 13, 2011. In June 2017, the 1st Armored Division Headquarters and the Division Artillery Headquarters deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
In 1962, the U.S. Army activated 2nd Brigade at Fort Hood (known as Fort Cavazos since April 2023), Texas, re-designating the unit from Combat Command B to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division.
After being separated from 1st Armored Division for five years, the Iron Eagles of the Division’s Combat Aviation Brigade and the Iron Soldiers of the 1st Armored Division reunited during the brigade’s activation ceremony at Fort Bliss, Texas.
Col. John Kirchgessner assumed duty as the Commander of the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, Fort Bliss, Texas, on June 12, 2025. He received his commission through Army ROTC as an Air Defense Artillery officer in 2002 from Elon University, North Carolina.
