Short answer: yes, you should refrigerate all syrups and that includes Velvet Falernum despite the small amount of alcohol. Long answer: while it won't go "bad", without refrigeration, the flavor WILL change significantly over time.
I stock Velvet Falernum and also The Bitter Truth Golden Falernum. Both taste very different due to their spice makeup. Velvet is definitely more clove forward and sweeter. It's been a while since I've had the Golden Falernum, but I'd say it's more lime and ginger forward and comes in at 18% ABV, so packs more punch than the Velvet.
What can I do with Velvet Falernum? I bought a bottle to make Strange Brews from the Death and Co book (really good!) and am stumped with what else to do with it. It seems tropical, maybe tiki stuff? Any favorite drinks?
Velvet falernum as a cordial-like object is possibly more unsafe than a processed orgeat syrup or distilled liqueur, but may also be ok. Let them decide, if in doubt, just avoid a questionable allergen.
It usually contains ginger, almonds, cloves, lime and sugar, but it can be clear (Velvet Falernum), cloudy (Golden Falernum), boozy, non-alcoholic, so the flavor of the Falernum will vary from recipe to recipe and brand to brand.
Per the distributor, Velvet Falernum is expected to keep at room temp for 2-3 years. In the fridge, it will keep indefinitely. So if you will use your bottle up within a year or two, and you value your fridge space, then sure, you don't really stand to benefit from keeping it in there.
John D. Taylor Velvet Falernum shelf life after opened in the fridge? Googled for ten minutes and can't believe I couldn't find anything. I've had some JDT Velvet Falernum in my fridge for a solid 6-8 months now and not sure if it's good to drink and how long that will be for. Eye-test-wise, there was nothing floating on top and no cloudiness.
Tropical Standard Falernum Has anyone tried Falernum recipe from Tropical Standard yet? I'm wondering how it compares to John D. Taylor's Velvet Falernum. Tropical Standard's would take a lot of work and expense. Is it worth it?
Falernum Substitute? I can't get Velvet Falernum where I live, and I don't feel like making it only for it to go bad in two weeks. Are there any substitutes or easy ways to make it? Thanks :)
Total wine seems to be the only place I can find it so my options are pretty limited. Is velvet falernum worth buying?
