The session begins with the announcement of opinions - decisions in argued cases - followed by the swearing in of new members to the Bar of the Supreme Court. These sessions, which typically last 15-30 minutes, are open to the public.

Each opinion sets out the Court’s judgment and its reasoning and may include the majority or principal opinion as well as any concurring or dissenting opinions.
The Court generally hears two arguments a day, with occasional afternoon arguments. Since the majority of cases involve the review of a decision of some other court, there is no jury and no witnesses are heard.
As the final arbiter of the law, the Court is charged with ensuring the American people the promise of equal justice under law and, thereby, also functions as guardian and interpreter of the Constitution.
Nine Justices make up the current Supreme Court: one Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices. The Honorable John G. Roberts, Jr., is the 17th Chief Justice of the United States, and there have been 104 Associate Justices in the Court’s history.
