This site is the homepage for the Global Volcanism Program at the Smithsonian Institution. It provides current volcanic activity notices, historical volcanic activity reports published by the Smithsonian since 1968, and basic data about over 1500 Holocene volcanoes.
The Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program (GVP) is housed in the Department of Mineral Sciences, National Museum of Natural History, in Washington D.C. We are devoted to a better understanding of Earth's active volcanoes and their eruptions during the last 10,000 years.

The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is a cooperative project between the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program. Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI). A simple 0-to-8 scale of increasing eruption explosivity, with each interval representing an order of magnitude increase. The VEI combines total volume of explosive products, eruptive cloud height, and other descriptive measures of eruption.
The Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report (WVAR) for the week ending on 17 June 2025 includes the 27 volcanoes shown below marked "Yes" in the WVAR column (rollover for report). The most recently started eruption is at the top, continuing as of the Last Known Activity date.
Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program data for Quaternary (Holocene and Pleistocene) volcanoes are available as a Google Earth layer, including a photo (when available), various information and summary descriptions, and links to volcano profile pages.
The Smithsonian's "Eruptions, Earthquakes, & Emissions" web application (or "E3") is a time-lapse animation of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes since 1960. It also shows volcanic gas emissions (sulfur dioxide, SO 2) since 1978 — the first year satellites were available to provide global monitoring of SO 2.
The Global Volcanism Program database currently contains 1,261 volcanoes with eruptions during the Holocene period (approximately the last 12,000 years). Primary names are sorted below in alphabetical order.
