Well it certainly isn't good practice for Hastings Direct or any insurance company to offer a quote based on answers to everything they've asked, give you a price, give you a clicky to "buy now" and literally hide in small print something as important as not paying out on a stolen vehicle if no tracker is fitted !
My son passed his driving test last June, we bought him a 2012 Corsa at the end of October. He got a quote from Compare the Market for Hastings Direct for £2400 with a £700 excess and me as a second driver with 20 years no claims bonus. Checked my myself and my husband. Paid in full at the time.
The MID offers two checks your can do: 1) Own Vehicle - this simply says yes or no for the date the query was run, it provides no further details and you are only allowed to use it for a vehicle you own 2) Third party vehicle - this check costs £10, you have to specify a date on which you want the check to be done and you will get the full details of the insurer, policynumber etc.
Since I sent a cancellation request by email on 31/1/23, Hastings have auto renewed me twice (over £1200) and now only offer a protata return from the time I brought this matter to their attention (so called insurance period from 2/24 to 2/25).

I'm just going through the same dilemma. Hastings and their other products (insurepink, peoples choice) are all a lot cheaper. My renewal quote is £400 with Aviva, Hastings quotes start from £257 up to £318. The next name is LV at £322. I don't know what to do, go for the cheapest or go for a big name. The policy excesses are the same.

Direct line you have to declare, Hastings you have to declare, and many others, so if you have so much as a zoo number sticker or a baby on board sticker, you need to either remove it or check with your insurer if you need to declare it as a modification. Be warned!
