After a quick test, it seems that Safari clears its cache of 301s when it is restarted, but Firefox does not. When do IE, Chrome, Firefox and Safari clear their cache of 301s? For example, if I want to redirect 1.example to 2.example , but I accidentally set it to redirect to 3.example , that is a problem.
I'm trying to set up 301s for a site which will bounce all old pages to the homepage (it was a large site that is now a single page). The server's Windows based, however, so no htaccess fun for me.
This is awful for SEO, and I'm trying to make these redirects 301s. I've tried adding page.html objects in the root directory and setting up a redirect to /page/ per Amazon's instructions. This only creates 301s for /page.html. /page still causes a 302.
*at least Chrome and Firefox, according to How long do browsers cache HTTP 301s?. Just tried it with Chrome 45. Edit: Safari 7.0.6 on Mac also caches, a browser restart didn't help (Link says that on Safari 5 on Windows it does help.)

Well, there is no limit to the number of HTTP 301 redirects and this number does not impact SEO. The only thing to avoid is too many redirect for the same page (i mean redirects in series) because it produces a lack of performance (loading speed) and so it damages the user experience.
