Not my first car, but I bought my 1st Miata in 1999. Followed by a 2003, another 1997, and then a 2006. In 2020 I bought a BMW M240iX convertible. I miss my Miata every day. But, I have grandchildren now and my kids won't let me take the grandchildren for a ride if there isn't a back seat. The long road trips in a Miata never bothered me.

The Mazda 2.5 balancer is interchangeable with the 2.0 balancer, but the 2.5 is a few pounds heavier. Ford versions have a different timing ring. it also has a different harmonic frequency and should not be used with the 2.5 crank with the balancer removed and a lighter flywheel.

Mazda's DI engines aren't as prone to intake valve deposit buildup as some (early VW DI 2 litres, for example), but it still happens, and can still be reduced by using an appropriate oil. A Google search for "VW 504.00 oil" will show lists of approved oils (note, they're ALL 5W-30 or 0W-30 - huh, how about that, water thin oils vapourize more ...
Beyond that, the gains to be had from ANY ECU modification on an otherwise stock Miata are not dramatic, presupposing that one will be running pump gas, driving on the street, etc. Probably 95% or more of the "serious" ECU work done on the Miata is in support of a forced-induction system. Matt, as usual, is on the ball.
