I agree with you and found that when Im doing my first layer of grey, I need to cover almost 90% of the figure and make sure that the black stays only in the darkest and most recessed parts. Also, I use 2 grey layers to help further blend the shadows. Slap Chop, imo, sacrifices the blending of shadows in favor of saving time.
