팔라초 베키오 (Palazzo Vecchio)는 산타 크로체 성당 (1294~1443)과 피렌체 두오모 (1296~1469)를 설계한 아르놀포 디 캄비오 (Arnolfo di Cambio, 1240~1310) 가 1298~1314년에 건축하였다. 원래 이름은 팔라초 시뇨리아 (Palazzo della Signoria)로 피렌체 공화국 정부청사로 사용되었으며, 1540년부터 코시모 1세 토스카나 대공의 거주지로도 사용되었다. 1550년 코시모 1세가 피티 궁전 (Palazzo Pitti)으로 거주지를 옮긴 이후에는 1565년부터 정부청사의 기능이 피티 궁전과 우피치 (Uffizi)로 넘어갔다.
