I should have specified that the character I was working with, Coach from a classic PC game, was only one example. I've had similar issues with almost all 3D models other than the ones on the Mixamo site. I find the models on Mixamo overall to be pretty dismal - it is the animations that are interesting. thanks so much for your help.
