This bowl is probably Karatsu ware or early Satsuma ware made in the first half of the 17th century. Similar examples have been excavated from sites in Kagoshima Prefecture but have not been found yet in northern Kyushu or Honshu. The style and shape is comparable to Karatsu-type ware with iron brown glaze decoration and a prunus blossom design.
