After several attempts at fixing by diverting water and drains outside we finally dug down to the footer from the outside. Apparently a wooden stick was used to keep the forms apart during the concrete pour and that had rotted away over the years making a good sized hole into my basement.
The assumption is that there will be limited amounts of debris entering the grate, and the wider the gaps, the faster water will be removed from the area. On the other hand, the drain covers installed over drains outside of a building may have smaller openings, even if the grate's size is larger.

If the water is allowed to pool it will eventually rise until it pours into your basement right through the windows!

The mini hose is there to drain this water so that you can remove the filter without a sudden rush of water coming out when you remove the filter. If no water comes out of the mini hose and does when the filter is removed then there's a blockage somewhere Was this answer helpful?
