Using a statutory declaration to change your name in the UK is a legally recognised and cost-effective process. By following the correct steps, completing the necessary paperwork, and having your declaration witnessed by a solicitor, you can officially adopt your new name.
People change their names for many reasons, including marriage, divorce, reflecting a change in gender identity, or simply wanting a fresh start. Whatever your reason, it’s important to follow the correct legal procedures for changing your name to avoid complications with banks, government agencies, and other organisations.
If you are aged 16 or 17 and wish to change your name, you can do so by way of a Change of Name Deed, as described above, without your parent’s consent, so long as you are not subject to a Child Arrangements Order, Residence Order, Special Guardianship Order, Care Order or interim Care Order.

We still need evidence of the change of name (unless the court order specifically shows the change of name) and evidence they use the new name for all official purposes.
If you want to officially change either your surname, forename or both, you must complete a deed poll or a statutory declaration of change of name. You must then notify everyone of your new name.
Provided you don't intend to deceive or defraud anyone, you can use any name you choose. You can change your name informally and later swear a statement confirming the new name, or you can change your name formally by a deed poll.
If you have changed your name from what is on your original tenancy agreement due to marriage, civil partnership, divorce, dissolution of civil partnership or by deed poll, you will need to provide a copy of your relevant certificates or legal paperwork.
If you get a statutory declaration, it is legal proof that you have undertaken a name change. A statutory declaration must be witnessed by a solicitor (but not the person who prepared your statutory declaration) or a Justice of the Peace (JP) and be signed by you using your new name.
