Miklós Horthy ... Miklós Horthy de Nagybánya[a] (18 June 1868 – 9 February 1957) was a Hungarian admiral and statesman who was the regent of the Kingdom of Hungary during the interwar period and most of World War II, from 1 March 1920 to 15 October 1944.
Miklós Horthy (born June 18, 1868, Kenderes, Hung., Austria-Hungary—died Feb. 9, 1957, Estoril, Port.) was a Hungarian naval officer and conservative leader who defeated revolutionary forces in Hungary after World War I and remained the country’s head of state until 1944.
István Horthy de Nagybánya (9 December 1904 – 20 August 1942) was a Hungarian politician and fighter pilot during World War II. He was briefly Vice-Regent of Hungary in 1942, and was the eldest son of Hungarian regent Miklós Horthy.
Horthy, descendent of a mid-level noble family from east-central Hungary, served as commander of the Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Navy during the final nine months of the First World War.
In the wake of the 1938 Munich agreement, Hitler shared the territorial spoils of Czechoslovakia, returning parts of southern Slovakia to Hungary. Horthy later paraded into the reannexed territory on a white horse and was received with overwhelming enthusiasm.

Horthy had been arguing for months with the Admiralty for an attack on the blockade to clear Otranto Bay and, on the 4th May 1917 under his leadership, three cruisers sailed from the port of Cattaro: the Novara, the Saida and the Helgoland, and two Hungarian destroyers, the Csepel and the Balaton.

Horthy was born in Kenderes in 1868, and educated at the Naval Academy of Fiume. During World War I (1914-1918) he became admiral of the Austro-Hungarian navy. After the war he returned to Hungary and organized a counterrevolution against the communist government of Béla Kun.
This former Hungarian statesman who was also a naval hero (Horthy, Horthy et Simon, 2000) played a relevant role in the interwar period and during the Second World War not only in Hungary, but also in European politics, especially after 1935 (Janos, 2012: 298).
