Owner / Manager: The Royal Parks Access: Public access. There are around 1,300 veteran trees in Richmond Park recorded on the Ancient Tree Inventory, and around 320 of these are ancient. One of the most impressive of these is the Royal Oak, which can be found near Pen Ponds and is estimated to be around 750 years old.

Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve is home to the legend of Robin Hood and the famous Major Oak, voted England’s tree of the year in 2014. With almost 400 living ancient oaks and more than 500 veteran oaks, Sherwood is a treat for lovers of old trees.
The Belvoir Oak. The Belvoir Oak is estimated to be 500 years old and is possibly the oldest oak in Northern Ireland. Located in Belvoir Park Forest, Belfast, it is recognised as part of the country’s living heritage, having witnessed the growth of Belfast from a small settlement to the city it is today. view details

Oaks and limes are among the ancient and veteran trees in the medieval deer park at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water gardens. A lime tree avenue leads through the deer park to the estate’s original entrance and all the way to Ripon Cathedral, and other trees of interest include the Royal Lime (pictured) with its amazing reactive growth.

The Beeches, covering 220 hectares, is famous for its ancient beech and oak pollards and the range of flora and fauna associated with old trees and decaying wood. Much of Burnham Beeches was once wood pasture.
Kensington Gardens is a Grade I listed Royal Park, spanning 242 acres and receiving over 10 million visits a year. The Gardens are known globally for links with J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan and the British royal family. Less known, however, is the significant number of veteran trees. view details
