This year have avoided issue by getting warm calf-length hiking socks from Decathlon...not very elegant, but do the job! I still use the cream on dry hard skin patches.

Do make sure your boots are worn in as well, but socks without seams are the best and not too ridged. If you have a Decathlon they have a good selection of walking socks and I'm sure will advise you.
Decathlon are a good shop but I would highly recommend Go Outdoors. They have very helpful staff who aren't kids (sorry to the kids). Only places I wouldn't recommend are Mountain Warehouse and Sports Direct. They NEVER have enough staff available to help you and the staff are very moody. Don't buy online - you are likely to be disappointed.
