Heritage is written into the landscape at Allean. Before the conifers were planted, this was home to generations of farmers. You can discover a restored 18th century homestead above the car park, or travel back another thousand years at the remains of an ancient Pictish fort overlooking Loch Tummel.
This enjoyable waymarked forest walk has plenty of interest, including a restored black house at the site of an old clachan, and an ancient ring fort. The route begins from near the Queen's View, famed for its outlook over Loch Tummel.
The Allean Forest overlooks the shores of Loch Tummel and many waymarked trails have been established by the Forestry Commission. These walks combine varied terrain, tree species and archaeological remains.
A beautiful, peaceful trail through a part of Allean Forest, offering stunning views of Loch Tummel through the trees. You'll pass an interesting historical site of the Clachan Community and cross several streams along the way.
With some lovely views and interesting Pictish and Black House ruins, Allean Forest makes for a lovely walk. It’s not too strenuous and takes roughly an hour or so (depending on what route you take) and so is suitable for less able walkers.
Starting at the Allean Forest car park, follow the way marked walk through the forest passing a partly restored eighteenth century black house or ‘clachan’ and further on, the remains of an eighth century `ring fort` in a commanding position overlooking Loch Tummel.
Allean is a steep conifer plantation above Loch Tummel with stunning views, an information centre and good network of paths. Several small burns run down the hillside, which also has a number of archaeological sites (farmstead & Pictish ring fort!)
It is a wonderfully varied route across peat hags and heather with views that get better and better until you reach the trig point on the third hill and can see 360° across Rannoch Moor and out to the Black Mountains, Glencoe, Ben Nevis and the Cairngorms.

Visit the impressive ruin of an 8 th Century ring fort. Ancient ruins, stunning views and peaceful forest near Queens View, the famous lookout point. The shop, cafe and toilets are currently closed at Queens View.
