Trevose Head Lighthouse is a lighthouse on Trevose Head on the north Cornish coast at grid reference SW850766 lying to the WSW of Padstow [3] and was sited here as there was previously no light from Land's End to Lundy [4] and it would be visible from Cape Cornwall to Hartland Point. [5]
Trevose Head Lighthouse has played a crucial role in maritime navigation since it was first lit in 1847. Situated on Trevose Head, a prominent headland, the lighthouse was constructed to warn ships of the dangerous reefs and rocks along the Cornish coast.
Originally two fixed lights were displayed at Trevose Head. The High Lighthouse still stands, and a separate Low Light housed a second lantern at the base of the tower.
Home of Trevose lighthouse (owned by Trinity House) and the RNLI Padstow Lifeboat Station as well as a number of species of birds including skylarks and linnets.
The area—like so much of the Devon and Cornwall coastline—is constantly obscured by sea mists. Originally a pair of leading lights—only the high light remains today—the low light was discontinued in 1882, at the same time that an oil-burning occulting light was installed in the remaining lighthouse.
