Dinnington was originally a small, isolated farming community, based around the New Road area of the town. Quarrying in the area helped expand the population, but it was the sinking of the Dinnington Main Colliery in 1905 that led to the real growth of the settlement.
A chance remark, made at our Dinnington Heritage Society meeting, led us to think about holding an exhibition to illustrate how the opening of Dinnington Pit, in 1905, changed Dinnington, from a small agricultural village, to what it is today. Photographs, artefacts and stories began to flood in.
Dinnington Parish Council, formed in 1919, was responsible for the other half of Dinnington. 1920 saw the first council houses built in the area, and by 1947 Dinnington had the use of mains water and gas, electricity and street lighting.

Dinnington is a small town located in South Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 10 miles east of Sheffield and has a population of around 9,000 people. The town has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age.
A long barrow was found at Dinnington which was levelled in 1862, a large number of skeletons of both sexes and all ages was found inside. No weapons or ornaments were found with them.
