This is a pretty common pattern. I've written that code a bunch of times. Two things: I wouldn't run this in the same process as the rest api. Just deploy two Node apps; one to poll the queue, and one to handle web requests. If you're actually using AWS SQS, I would strongly consider deploying the queue reader as a lambda function, which saves writing the poller yourself.
