سميت سورة الدخان بهذا الاسم لورود لفظ الدخان في الآية العاشرة منها، بقوله تعالى: {فَارْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِي السَّمَاءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُبِينٍ} ، وقد جعل الله تبارك وتعالى الدخان آيةً لتخويف الكفار، إذ بعثه عليهم حتى كادوا يهلكوا، وانكشف عنهم ببركة دعاء النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم.
