多行不義必自斃語出〔春秋左傳．隱公元年〕，意為一個人的作為經常違反義時，是自取滅亡。 傳中說魯隱公元年（西元前722年）五月，鄭莊公打敗共叔段于鄢，〔左傳〕的解釋是共叔段「多行不義，必自斃。 此說的歷史背景是鄭武公娶中國之女武姜，生了莊公與共叔段。 莊公出生時難產，因此不得母親喜歡。 於是其母偏愛其弟共叔段，想立共叔段為國君繼承人，武公不允，莊公得以即位，共叔段恃母親寵愛，請求破格封於京城（為鄭國規定不得分封的地域），莊公暫時曲從，時人遂稱之為「京城大叔」。 由於共叔段自幼受母親溺愛，猖狂跋扈，不但擴張領土，廣納民眾，還整修城郭、聚積糧草、整編兵車，預備偷襲鄭莊公而奪位。 在其叛變後，莊公命子封率戰車二百輛去討伐，京城人民響應子封，共叔段不戰而敗，逃往鄢地。
