In fact, I can't imagine what learning french would have been like without online tools like wordreference and reverso.net, especially if I had to use a physical dictionary. Rapidly copying and pasting words into wordreference, copying the definition into anki and making a flashcard within 8 seconds... if your goal is to learn the language efficiently then this is the way.

IMO letting the kids make mistakes and let them speak freely would be the right way to give them the confidence they need to understand, catch the accent(s) and learn to speak well. We all make mistakes (in french, german, spanish, english) and nobody gives a fuck. Thus, most people in France speak a basic english with a terrible accent...

This. "Con" litteraly mean "Cunt", but carries a lot less insult on french. You can get punched in the face for calling someone a cunt in english, and it is a word you would not use in a lot of situation. Con is a lot more comomyl used, and can be quite a friendly insult.
